Like many students, in my earliest days of figure study I labored intently, filling pad after pad of newsprint with lines and smudges of charcoal in my attempt to understand anatomy and find the proper expression of the living form that presented itself in the center of the studio. Many newsprint pads (and years) later, I decided on watercolor as a medium to explore figurative art. I find the fragile nature of watercolor to be challenging to work with, yet unsurpassed in delivering the luminosity and delicate colors of natural light that I observe in nature. It also allows me to work quickly, blocking in areas with tone and value rather than capturing them in line. I find this approach refreshing and natural. Many of the model studies shown here were created at the Art Students League of New York.
